Unplanned Closure of Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre @cityofvictoria #yyj

Date: Monday, January 16, 2012 For Immediate Release

VICTORIA, BC — The Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre was to reopen this morning at 5:30 a.m. after a planned six-week closure in December and early January. The planned work was completed and the facility was operating at full capacity last night. At about 3 a.m. this morning, a computer control board that manages the mechanical and electrical system failed and the Centre was unable to reopen. The failure is not related to the work completed in the past month.

The computer panel controls the ventilation and temperature controls for the facility including the pool temperatures, heating, and humidity. The panel is about 30 years old and was planned for replacement this spring. Staff are working to see if there are any panels available on Vancouver Island or the Lower Mainland. The facility is expected to be closed for at least three days.

The administrative desk remains open for walk-ins and phone registrations and queries. All programs starting in the next couple of days will be postponed by one week. All program registrants affected by the closure will receive a call explaining the circumstances.
