THE YOU SHOW – Giving local emerging artists a push

Jan – May 2012, Monthly @ Intrepid Theatre Club

Intrepid Theatre is pleased to announce the 2012 YOU SHOW season, running from January through May 2012 at the Intrepid Theatre Club, which kicks off with Cougar Annie Tales on Jan 21 at 8pm. This new work by local singer Katrina Kadoski and the Other Guys Theatre Co. looks at the life of the legendary West Coast settler Cougar Annie, who lived in a Clayoquot coastal rainforest and earned her reputation by shooting 70 of the animals.

The YOU SHOW, organized by Intrepid Theatre, started out in 2010 as a humble new-work incubator project and has turned into a thriving program that heralds Victoria's most exciting new independent theatre creators. The program has presented 10 new plays-in-development to date, including Justin Carters' Son of Africville (which went on to become a hit Uno Fest show and has been picked up by theatre producers to tour the Maritimes) and Ingrid Hansen's Little Orange Man (the Canadian Fringe circuit hit that won ‘Pick of the Fringe’ in Vancouver and Victoria, and is slated for a run at the Vancouver Playhouse).

2012 YOU SHOW SEASON

March 10, 8pm: Scrumpy Productions presents a workshop staging of Julian Cervello’s (Canterbury Cocktails, Fringe 2011) new one-man show The Wyf of Bathe. Of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, none are more accessible than the Wife of Bathe. Performed entirely in its original Middle English, this raunchy and explicit, yet deeply moving 600-year-old comedy about the life of a Medieval woman named Alisoun demonstrates how timeless the structure of a ‘contemporary one-woman show’ really is. The original desperate housewife of the English theatre was written and acted by Chaucer himself, and she is still recognizable today.

April 21, 8pm: Mad Actress, by Marina Lagace. A one-woman show about actress Vivian Leigh and her struggles with bipolar and to define the line between her on-screen roles and off-screen identity.

May 12, 8pm: Andrew Wade directs a staged reading of his first full-length, two act play, The Romantics. Andrew is becoming a well-known local Fringe performer (William vs. the World, Fringe 2011) and this script won the Vancouver Young Playwrights award.

Intrepid Theatre
Jan – Apr 2012, Metro Studio

 L’Orchestre d’Hommes-Orchestres

Intrepid Theatre is well known for the Fringe and Uno Festivals, but at the beginning of the year we bring to the Metro Studio highly regarded international performers who are often touring to Canada’s prestigious stages such as the Habourfront Centre, Theatre Passe Muraille and the PuSh Festival in Vancouver.

The 2012 Season includes some unmissable cutting edge theatre including Quebec City’s L’Orchestre d’Hommes-Orchestres (The One Man Band-Band) with their powerful tribute to the world of Tom Waits, in which six frenzied musicians use nearly 100 objects and invented instruments – from teacups to turkey-basters – to create madcap scenes of unbridled energy. Believe us, you’ve never seen Tom Waits performed like this.

“A grandiose spectacle of audacity and multidisciplinary magic.” – Voir Estrie

At the Metro Studio, March 25, 2012. Tickets $26 – on sale soon through ticketrocket.org. This presentation is made possible through the support of Canada Arts Council.

Joséphina

“A playful and poetic little jewel” all the way from Belgium, La Compagnie Chaliwaté’s Joséphina is a shockingly beautiful, sexy, funny, and mysterious piece of physical theatre about a man and a woman: a woman who is both absent and omnipresent. Is it the story of a perfect, passionate couple, or a shattered one? Between reality and fantasy the body and the word come together in a very intimate fashion, allowing poetic shifts and entanglements, and comical changes in direction in a moving and mysterious story of obsession, love and loss.

At the Metro Studio, March 21 & 22, 2012. Tickets $22/$17 (adult/student & senior), on sale soon through ticketrocket.org.

ONE THOUSAND CRANES

“A bright, hip show, complex and satisfying.” – LA Times

A young Japanese girl is diagnosed with leukemia nine years after Hiroshima. Determined to live, she folds origami cranes, a symbol of hope. Across the Pacific in Canada, a young boy believes that there’s nothing he can do to stop an inevitable nuclear war.

This beautifully crafted story performed in Japanese with English surtitles by Bunkaza theatre company (Tokyo), weaves together these twin stories looking at the implications and fallout of nuclear war.

At the Metro Studio, February 16+17, 2012. Tickets $22/$17 (adult/student & senior), on sale soon through http://www.ticketrocket.org/.

Blue Bridge continues with the tradition of featuring North America`s most highly regarded performers, with season highlights including the incomparable Nicola Cavendish (as Shirley Valentine), film and theatre star and aboriginal activist Gary Farmer (Dead Man), jazz and blues legend Jeff Jones and the return of actors of the stature as Amanda Lisman, Dylan Smith, Thea Gill, David Ferry and Brian Linds.

Brian Richmond, Producing Artistic Director of Blue Bridge, is predicting that 2012 will be the season that will mark the arrival of one of B.C.’s leading acting ensembles at Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre. First up will be a special presentation of Willy Russell’s Shirley Valentine, followed by the previously announced productions of George Bernard Shaw’s Arms and the Man, John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men and Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s plant musical Little Shop of Horrors.

Featuring the talents of several of the directors, designers and actors who have established the reputation of this exciting, multi-award winning professional theatre, the 2012 Season also continues with the Blue Bridge tradition of providing significant creative opportunities to some of Victoria’s and  B.C.’s most exciting young theatre artists.

“To have an established acting company that is capable of tackling the great plays of North America and Europe has been a dream of ours since the beginning of Blue Bridge. This season marks the deepening and maturing of this dream,” Richmond said. Known for his long history of creating innovative theatre, developing new work, and attracting remarkable artists who share his ethos of placing the work of the actor front and centre, Richmond re-emphasized that the soul of Blue Bridge Rep lies in its ability to provide “a home for classic plays and a theatre where our country’s finest young talent can develop by being provided with opportunities to work alongside artists of exceptional stature.”

Eurydice

February 16 -25, 2012

By Sarah Ruhl
Directed by MFA Candidate, Jeffrey Pufahl

Award winning playwright Sarah Ruhl boldly reimagines the classic myth of Orpheus through the eyes of its quirky heroine, Eurydice. Dying too young on her wedding day, Eurydice journeys into the Mad-Hatter realm of the underworld where she is reunited with her long lost father. Here, she struggles to recall fading memories of her life as both a bride and a daughter. Infused with the melancholy music of Orpheus, Eurydice is a swim through the idiosyncratic stream of the unconscious – magical, a little menacing, but definitely compelling!

THE MAROWITZ HAMLET

March 15-24, 2012

By William Shakespeare & Charles Marowitz
Guest Director Charles Marowitz

What if one were to cut Shakespeare's masterpiece up into individual lines and piece it back together to tell the story anew? This would be a Marowitz play. Synonymous to a contemporary "mash-up," Marowitz doesn't re-write Shakespeare, but uses the existing lines to bring new insight to speeches and characters' motives. An acclaimed playwright, director and critic, Marowitz has worked closely with the Royal Shakespeare Company, co-founded Encore Magazine and is a regular contributor to The New York Times, The London Times, Theater Week, and American Theater.
